Codeine Rehab

Will Codeine Detox Change my Life?

Codeine is one of the most rapidly developing addictive opiate drugs in the country.  It is prescribed for many medical issues, particularly to relieve pain and anxiety.  Due to the variety of dosage and usage, there are many levels of addiction as well as levels of abuse.  Since codeine is an opiate, it has many similar side effects to other opiates including dry mouth, nausea, vomiting, and other effects.  For those already addicted to codeine, these side effects are no mystery.  However, one question many addicts will ask themselves before they decide to break their codeine addiction:  Will codeine detox change my life?

Detoxing from codeine will get you on your way to a happier and healthier life.

Fighting Withdrawal

Once a person decides to break their cycle of addiction, the first concern they have is the withdrawal period.  There are many symptoms to be concerned about, according to the National Library of Medicine, including:  muscle aches, insomnia, abdominal cramping, nausea and vomiting to name just a few.  These withdrawal symptoms can appear as quickly as just a few short hours before the next dose of codeine is due.  Because of this rapid withdrawal process, many people simply continue taking the drug, rather than go through the detox process; however, there are several detox methods that can make this process much easier.

Detox Methods

A more popular method of detox that makes breaking the addiction much easier is the rapid anesthesia detox method.  This is when a person is given medication to calm down and is then put under anesthesia for a short period of time.  This process helps eliminate some of the more intense withdrawal symptoms.  After the procedure takes place, usually under medical supervision, the patient will usually sleep frequently which will allow them to remain unconscious through most of the rest of the detox process.
The other detoxification method is not quite as popular but can be just as effective.  This method relies on decreasing the amount of codeine being taken on a daily basis until the patient can stop taking it completely.  Although this method doesn’t allow the person to skip the withdrawal symptoms, it does give them the ability to find ways in their daily environment to cope when they feel their cravings.  Many times patients choosing this method will do so at a rehabilitation facility, where trained medical staff can coach and support them through the process.

Life Changing

Codeine detox is a life changing experience in many different ways.  Not only does it allow the patient to break the cycle of addiction, it also helps their bodies by allowing them to avoid the more damaging withdrawal symptoms which can increase over time and usage of the drug.  By choosing to detox, the body is then given a chance to heal since it can then repair the damage done to it after years of codeine abuse.  Perhaps the most important benefit is that detoxification allows the patient to concentrate on building a healthier supportive environment around them versus struggling to make it through the daily pain.
