Codeine Rehab

Finding Codeine Treatment for Addiction

Codeine is an opiate, which is an analgesic or a mild pain reliever; it actually distorts the brain’s perception of pain. Codeine abuse has quickly become a serious problem. People don’t realize how quickly they can become addicted to this drug whether it has been prescribed for them or they are using it illegally. Codeine treatment whether, it is an inpatient or outpatient center, will require the addict to undergo detoxification as a beginning phase of treatment. Typically that first phase of treatment, the detox will be under medical supervision for the safety and comfort of the patient. It is so important that the patient complete this as swiftly as possible so they can begin to take the steps necessary to become drug free. Codeine addiction is difficult and so are some of the withdrawal symptoms it can cause. While it is important to realize that each patient will be affected differently some of the withdrawal symptoms can include muscle spasms, irritability, vomiting, diarrhea, and intense pain.

What to look for in a treatment program

While the goal of any drug abuse treatment center is to stop the drug abuse and return the recovering addict to lead a normal, active life at home with their family, friends, their work and in their community, it is important to be sure the program is fully rounded and can conquer each of these challenges with the person as it arises. One constant challenge is to be sure the recovering addict remains in treatment long enough. The needs and wants of each person will vary; it is key to find the treatment center that will fulfill the needs of the individual. There are some factors to consider when seeking out the right treatment program:

Support groups are very helpful in addiction recovery.

  • To what extent is the codeine addiction?
  • How appropriate is the treatment for the individual?
  • Are there any additional services provided by the facility that would prove beneficial for the individual?
  • Are there quality providers who can relate to the program and the issues that may arise?

To assist you in your search for the right treatment facility or program the National Institute on Health some questions that you should ask:

  1. Does the program have treatments that are backed up by scientific research?
  2. Do they meet any specific needs a patient may have?
  3. Is the program willing to change to meet the needs of the patient as their needs change?
  4. Is the program long enough?
  5. Do they use the 12-Step recovery program or other such plans

The support of family and friends, who want to motivate the patient towards succeeding in the program and after, play a very important role in recovery. With their encouragement and support the recovering addict will realize the importance of completing their treatment and remaining drug free after the program. However, you should realize that this is a difficult process for them to go through as well. It is important to check with the facility to see if there are support programs for your loved ones as well.
