Codeine Addiction Symptoms

Don’t let your codeine addiction symptoms get the best of you any longer!

Developing an addiction to codeine can happen to anyone; you don’t have to have addictive tendencies or be part of the lower class.  In fact, a little known fact about codeine is that most of its addicts are actually middle class Americans.  These people work every day, and look like normal, functioning adults to the outside.  However, behind closed doors their lives are spiraling out of control.  It can happen to your friends and neighbors, it can happen to you.  Addiction is nothing to be ashamed of; it is simply a medical condition that can be treated.

Codeine addictions symptoms typically range from subtle to much more obvious, and knowing them could provide you with the clues you need to put two and two together, and save a friend in need.  A subtle clue may be all you get in order to save someone’s life.  The good news is that there is usually some sort of clue that you can hone in on, as long as you know what to look for.

Doctor Shopping

One of the most obvious ways to tell that someone you know has a prescription drug problem is if you see them participating in a behavior called doctor shopping.  Doctor shopping is when someone frequents more than one doctor a month in an attempt to receive more of a medication than one doctor is willing to prescribe.  They do this with two, three and sometimes even more doctors at a time, in hopes of doubling and tripling the amount of medication they can receive.  When doctor shopping, you may also notice the person going to ERs more often than the normal person, and many times will fake pain or illness in an attempt to gain sympathies from people.

Behavioral Addiction Symptoms

There are many physical and behavioral symptoms of codeine addiction that can be helpful in determining when a loved one has a problem.  Some of the most obvious symptoms are the behavioral ones, and may be some of the first things you notice.  These behavioral symptoms can include a loss of interest in things they used to love, no sexual drive, reduction in productivity at work, indifference towards loved ones, and lack of emotion, drug use becoming their top priority, and withdrawing from society.  All of these changes in behavior can alert you to a deeper problem.

Physical Addiction Symptoms

The physical symptoms of codeine addiction can be seen only when a person does not have the medication and is beginning to withdraw, or when they are overdosing.  So these symptoms can include any of the physical issues that can be displayed during either of those types of situations.  Some of the most common symptoms are nausea and vomiting, sleeplessness, aches and pains, shakes and tremors, pinpoint pupils, blurred vision, confusion, difficulty breathing, trouble urinating and constipation.  If you notice someone displaying any of these symptoms, you should seek out medical care immediately, as this may just save their life.
